Montana became a territory in 1864 and was subsequently admitted to the union as a state in 1889. Early Montana politics was dominated by the war between the Copper Kings, two of the richest and most powerful men in America. Both were loyal democrats but their ongoing struggle to thwart the other’s political aspirations effected not only state elections and the location of the capital but also lead to the popular election of US Senators due to the corruption associated with William Clark’s Senatorial campaigns. Many campaign items have been produced supporting candidates for state offices, the campaign to locate the capital and also presidential items linked to Montana. This webpage will explore and present these items which include ribbons, badges, pinbacks, posters and other ephemera. In addition, there is a section providing the results of governor, senate and congressional races in Montana and others covering different aspects general political campaign item collection and preservation. Articles will be added from time to time but the dates of publication have been altered to maintain the desired order of the articles. Also, this is a living website so the articles will be updated and revised from time to time and new acquisitions added.
